This slender, easy to read volume is really about two characters- Alex and the author. When scientist Irene Pepperberg wanted to study animal cognition and language, she purchased an African Grey Parrot, who she named Alex. What followed was a thirty-year partnership that rocked the foundations of our understanding of animal intelligence and challenged all previous assumptions of the phrase "birdbrain." Pepperberg writes beautifully, bringing the study of language and cognition to an easily-understood level without dumbing down the impact of her work. Beyond science, however, Pepperberg captures the dignity and personality of Alex, a lovable and admirable creature whose early death was a tragic loss.
There are many funny and touching anecdotes about Alex as an individual who did not always choose to cooperate with research and had his own quirks, thoughts, and feelings.
For scientific information about the research completed with Alex, see the author's book entitled "The Alex Studies".

Beautiful Insights on Life and Death from the Animals
'Tell Me Where It Hurts' by Nick Trout. This book was amazing! I laughed, I cried, but mostly some of the tales of profound love between humans and animals, gave me chills. Dr. Nick Trout is the vet you wish you had, calling your pet "Cute Thing You.." and working with skill and compassion to keep your animal friend happy and healthy. In the book Dr. Trout condenses his 25 years of veterinary practice into a single very busy day, which starts at 2:47 a.m. with an emergency wake-up call. A 10-year-old German Shepherd with a life-threatening stomach problem requires emergency surgery. Even with a stomach about to burst, the old dog wags her tail when they meet. The book ends late at night, at 10:02 p.m., with this same old dog. What a journey in between.

We Can All Be A "Whisperer" If We Just Listen
'Animals in Spirit: Our Faithful Companion' by Penelope Smith. I would highly recommend this eBook for anyone who has loved and lost an animal. My favorite passage in the eBook is at the very end, in a poetic inspiration that came through Penelope, which states, in part: "Flow with spirit, ever-changing in its guises. See the wildflowers bloom and die and give their seeds to the Earth. Nothing ever really dies or fades. Everything dissolves into unity and flows into another sea or shower or puff of air". Uhm.. Touches my heart as I type it now.

Feel Like Froggin Out!
'The Natural Pet Food Cookbook:' by Wendy Nan Rees,Kevin Schlanger. I am impressed by the research and quality of this cookbook. I hope Ms. Rees continues to publish pet related books-her winning way of writing, the solid information she departs, and her great graphic style all combine to make her one of America's top pet lifestyle advisors.

My Favorite Animals
'Cesar's Way' by Cesar Millan. This is a wonderful reference eBook and makes for good reading as well. I bought the eBook to give as a gift to a young couple whose dog needs some behavior modification. I planned to read it quickly and through it to get an idea of its contents, download it, and give it away. However, I ended up reading it word for word and will add it to our library! (I can think of several dog owners and parents who could use the concepts in this book for raising both dogs and children. I will probably end up buying several copies as gifts.)

These Two Books Are Very Special!!!!! Great Reads.
'Rescuing Sprite' by Mark R. Levin. This book is just what the title says it's about...the joy and anguish of love. I read the entire book when I received it because I couldn't put it down, except of course to wake my 16 year old Kitty to hug and kiss her (no, she was not happy about that). I commend Mark for sharing so much of his personal life with us and anyone who listens to him KNOWS this is not what he does. This book, by a tough conservative talk show host, is as emotional a book as I have ever read. Anyone who has ever felt the loss of a pet will relate to the utter anguish that the author portrays in a sensitive, well-written way.

Four Legs Are Better Than Two
'Riding Lessons' by Sara Gruen. This eBook is the perfect crossover novel for teens. They'll be captured by the mystery of who is Hurrah. The first chapter just grabs you, and, for anyone who rides horses, this is an amazing depiction of the relationship between horse and rider. I highly recommend picking up Sara Gruen's other book, 'Water For Elephants', especially if you like this eBook. 'Water For Elephants' has even more maturity in Gruen's writing, but this first book is an amazing accomplishment for a novice writer. I highly recommend 'Riding Lessons'. Enjoy!

Pick A Year, Any Year. Ok, How About These Two?
'Rising Tide' Man versus the mighty Mississippi River! The river is freakishly powerful, seemingly a living thing with an intent to go where it pleases. I had never heard of the Mississippi flood before picking up this book. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, John Barry has become a great narrative and he deserves his new visibility. Barry tells his story with painstaking research and narrative of 75 years surrounding and including 1927. This is a GREAT book worth your time to read. They say, that in order to know the future, you must study the past. Too bad we're still not paying attention !!!!!!!!!!!
